FRUIT SALAD IS HERE! 🍑🍍🍊🍒🍉A Chromatic New Cement Tile Series by Avery Thatcher of Juju Papers

Handmade Cement Tiles in Electrifying Color

Avery Thatcher, founder / creative director of Portland, Oregon-based wallcoverings studio Juju Papers, adds a new category to her offerings: cement tile. The first series, Fruit Salad, is handmade ceramic encaustic tile, in kaleidoscopic color, calling for a serendipitous installation method.

Thatcher, who had experience setting tile prior to making her name as a wallpaper designer, wanted to bring the complexity and ornamentation of a handmade mosaic into a room without requiring a complicated installation. Tile installers accustomed to natural stone will recognize her installation technique, which entails selecting and spontaneously rotating each tile’s placement in turn.
FRUIT SALAD IN WHITE-RED and WHITE-BLUE RANDOMLY MIXED AND ROTATED 1:1

“Tile contours traditionally tend to be symmetrical. I wanted to flip the script and create a design that felt more experimental,” Thatcher notes. “The impromptu installation results in a truly random, scattered, colorful pattern; the warmth of a Persian rug combined with the pigment richness and vibrancy of a Morris Lewis painting.”

FRUIT SALAD IN BLACK-RED and BLACK-BLUE RANDOMLY MIXED AND ROTATED 1:1

Design professionals will have a first look during ICFF, at Juju Papers’ booth # 122.  Intended for both indoor and outdoor residential, hospitality, workplace and public spaces, Fruit Salad will be available beginning mid-May.
FRUIT SALAD IN WHITE-RED, WHITE-BLUE,
BLACK-RED and BLACK-BLUE RANDOMLY MIXED AND ROTATED 1:1

Made by hand, one at a time in Mexico, the 8”-diameter hexagonally-shaped cement tiles sport a billowy, five-color wave motif.  Two colorways -- one with white center, one with black – include such sumptuous hues as lilac, persimmon, ocre, blush and military blue.  Colors may be customized. A low-energy, no-fire process creates a deliciously washy matte finish.

Durable and Safe

Tile ingredients - marble dust, Portland cement, sand, mineral pigments, concrete - combined with the 1,700 PSI mechanical hydraulic presses used in manufacturing, ensure these tiles are durable enough for residential and commercial applications and both indoor and outdoor use. The tiles are a hefty ⅝” high, and weigh in at 3 lbs a piece. Adding to the durability, the wear (top) layer is a full ⅛” thick, which makes them appropriate for both floors and walls. The coefficient of friction is also well over the .42 standard - averaging in at .65 - making it safe for commercial traffic and wet applications.

JUJU PREMIERES HIGH DIVE SERIES AT ICFF, BOOTH 122

WILD THING GOCR_Enviro

Juju Papers, Avery Thatcher’s Portland, Oregon-based wallcoverings studio, is set to launch an unorthodox series of hand-printed papers this spring at ICFF. Titled High Dive, the new designs are all about the sweeping gesture, generous scale and lavish precious-metal colorways. “High Dive is bold, risky,” Thatcher suggests. From an exotic cannabis landscape to an over-the-top op art maze, these patterns express surprise, sensuality and daring. Thatcher is known for glamming up familiar motifs by portraying them in lush metallic inks; new color Champagne, an effervescent, semi transparent silver-gold, joins the Juju Papers palette.

Thatcher notes, “The oversized scale common to the four patterns introduces a bit of drama and surprise. Wallpaper is a great opportunity to bring some risk into a space - a counterbalance to architectural structure and the clean lines of most furniture. I wanted this series to exude the unpredictability of dripping paint strokes or a verdant plant. The contrast of a wild, washy gesture to a measured, controlled line."

Le Freak: A calligraphic maze of monumental scale, reminiscent of Robert Motherwell or Jean Arp. Two two-tone metallic colorways: Champagne on Cream, Gunmetal on Cream.

Maxi: A dichotomy of prominent negative space balanced against thick, painterly ring and line shapes. Three two-tone metallic colorways: Gold on Cream, Champagne on Cream, Gold on Charcoal.

Wild Thing: Lush botanical at first glance; edgy cannabis forest at second glance. Simplified to the most basic form, but then subverted and wrought in gloss. Four two-tone metallic colorways: Gold on Cream, Diamonds and Pearls on Cream, Gold on Charcoal, Gunmetal on Navy.

Sophisticated Rooms for Children // Spring Break Sale 20% off

Highlighting Some Creative Talent Putting Juju to Work in Nursery Design

Photo by Nikole Ramsay

Once a year, we try to highlight some designers who are making magic in nursery and child's room design. Finding a balance between playfulness and elegance is not always easy, but these designers are making it look that way!

"Children’s spaces are fast becoming a creative extension to the family home" says Nicole Rosenberg of Little Liberty Design, and her work certainly suggests that that is true.

Photo by Nikole Ramsay

Using our Sisters of the Sun in Gunmetal on Charcoal would be an obvious choice for a lounge, library, or adult bedroom. By bringing it into a nursery space, Nicole Rosenberg created an unexpected twist that brings everything else in the room into contrast -  creating pops of fun color, contrast and shape among a really consistently dark color scheme. It's daring while also being sophisticated and uncomplicated. In a word, modern.

  Photo from Josie Barber

Blogger Josie Barber of By Barber couldn't be cuter in this new nursery that she designed in anticipation of her baby boy on the way. Barber describes her minimalistic and monochrome design style as "rough luxe". Sounds like a perfect fit for Juju Papers, which are known for that great hi-low mix of metallic glamour and simple painterly designs.

She said of her use of Pas de Trois in Gold on Cream, "I knew I didn’t want it to be too ‘traditional’ or too colourful, so starting off with a neutral palette and a simple (yet funky) wallpaper seemed like a great place to start."

     Photo from Josie Barber

Finally, one of our favorite design and lifestyle personalities, Elsie Larson, has been sharing the inspiring story of being a new mom in her influential blog A Beautiful Mess, and we couldn't help but share daughter Nova's new playroom using one of Elsie's favorite wallpapers, Sisters of the Sun in Gold on Cream. Sisters of the Sun in Gold on Cream is a slam dunk when paired with pink and blush tones, and Elsie uses this combo frequently to achieve her signature look which she describes as "creating happiness every day through a homemade lifestyle."

New Year, New Projects: Oh Joy!

The happiest of New Years to you all! We hope that everyone had a restful holiday filled with family, friends, and love.

We are so excited about 2018! The Juju HQ crew is currently working hard to shoot and present our new line. Stay tuned!

In the meantime, we are thrilled to see acclaimed design blogger Oh Joy's office redesign featuring our old favorite, Sisters of the Sun in Gold on Cream, and Bomba in Gold on Cream in Domino Magazine!

"Juju Papers combines a mix of sophisticated tones and whimsical shapes that I just love. The lines are imperfect giving them a life and movement that is so beautiful and modern. It works so well with the Oh Joy aesthetic so it’s a favorite around here!"
- Joy Cho of Oh Joy!

With the help of interior designer Sarah Sherman Samuel, Oh Joy's office is a perfect reflection of her bright and playful style. Both wallpapers fit into the overall aesthetic by adding a little bit of metallic flash to the pops of color that are so distinctively Joy's signature look.

We love seeing Joy's career continue to blossom as she expands into new exciting collaborations and projects. She continues to value handmade products and thoughtful craftsmanship, which is reflected in her office where she has selected so many great pieces by smaller independent artists and designers such as Juju Papers.

Joy is able to mix affordable products along with higher-end finely crafted products to create a dazzling combination that works so well. Finding that balance is where the magic happens!

Powder Room Perfection

Mikola Accuardi's Powder Room, Photo by Mikola Accuardi

Looking for the perfect place to take a little risk with your home decor? Whether you are a wallpaper newbie or a total vet, your powder room is the perfect place to bring the wow. And, with so many of our wallpaper in stock and ready to ship, you still have time to order and install before your holiday guests start to arrive! To celebrate those who went that extra step to break the mold and up the wow factor by adding some uniquely elegant color and pattern via Juju Papers, we're highlighting some of our favorite recent powder room installs.

We love the way this Palea Gold on Cream dazzles in this showstopper of a powder room by Nelson Jones Interiors above.  And let's also take a minute to give props to Mikola Accuardi who boldly rocked that Sisters of the Sun on the ceiling of her amazing powder room in the opening photo. Wondering if wallpapering your powder room is right for you? Here are a few great reasons to try it:
1) If you have never wallpapered before, this is the perfect place to try living with pattern. We know you'll be back for more once you've tried it!
2) It is less expensive than papering a huge space.
3) Your holiday guests are going to fall over once they see how amazing your powder room looks! I mean, because of that and also because of how much eggnog they drank. ; 0

Some of our favorite clients, Bright Design Lab created this clean, modern, spa-like master bath above with the help of our Cle Elum in Silver in Gold on Charcoal. So serene! Next, Christopher Stevens, who used our Sisters of the Sun in Gold on Charcoal in this chic update below, said of the wallpaper:

“The client has very restrained tastes but wanted a little glamour in a special place – we both connected with the “Sisters of the Sun” paper instantly – it looks heavenly – literally!"

Thanks, Chris! We would love to help you choose a wallpaper to make your powder room go from zero to hero. Don't know where to start? No worries! Call or email us at sales@jujupapers.com and we will help you with every step of the way.

A New Season, A New Look for Your Home with Juju

Danielle Brustman Design, Photo by Nicole England @nicoleengland

Fall is here! Sure, spring is supposed to be the season for new beginnings, but fall's breeze also brings a sense of renewal. Fall brings up memories of starting a new school year, and with it a new opportunity to redefine yourself or set new intentions for the coming year. October is also a great time to think about making some simple changes that will give your home a new and refreshed look. A small home project now will go a long way in making your house look finished by the time your holiday guests start to arrive.

Elsie Larson - A Beautiful Mess, Photo by Amber Ulmer @amberulmer

An accent wallpaper is the perfect way to reinvent your look! The great thing about wallpaper is that you can just add wallpaper to your existing decor in order to update the space. You don't have to buy new furniture, new decor, or start from scratch. You can just add the wallpaper that coordinates with or updates your decor. What can be simpler than that?

Danielle Brustman Design, Photo by Nicole England @nicoleengland

We are continually inspired by the many talented designers that use our wallcoverings, and we have highlighted a few of our recent favorites here. In the boldly cool-toned room above designed by Danielle Brustman (@daniellebrustman) in Australia, she used a few rolls of Sisters of the Sun in Gold on Navy to create this captivating, moody, modern look that we love so much! We can not get enough of this room.

Elsie Larson - A Beautiful Mess, Photo by Amber Ulmer @amberulmer

Elsie Larson from A Beautiful Mess used one of our favorite patterns, Palea, on every wall of the dining room for some serious wow factor. Many people think that wallpapering a whole room can be overwhelming, but this gorgeous install shows much the opposite. If you choose a subtle textural pattern such as Palea, you can create a rich background that sets off all of the other design elements in the room. Elsie said of this wallcovering:

I get so many compliments on this wallpaper! I love that the room still feels neutral, bright and light, but with more texture and personality than a plain white room. It is so easy to decorate around and layer!

Do any of our patterns at Juju speak to your sense of style? Then, now is the time to do it! We are here to help you with your project every step of the way. Are you wondering any of the following: Can this wall be wallpapered? How much wallpaper do I need? How do you install wallpaper? Pop on over to Jujupapers.com in order to answer these questions, or just give us a call at 503 764 7610 and we can chat about it.

Happy Fall from all of us at Juju!

Why Gold is Your New Neutral /// Sale! 30% Off Juju Gold on Cream Wallpapers

Looking for a way to add some sophistication to your room? Consider gold on cream your new neutral! Our gold on cream wallpapers can be combined with any color palette, giving your space extra life and dimension that will compliment the rest of your decor.

Here's a few ways you might be able to use it in your own home:

Sheena Murphy, of Sheep and Stone, (designer of above room) said of Sisters of the Sun:

What I like most about this wallpaper is it's versatility; it feels just as at home in an elegant powder room as it does in a 6 year old's bedroom. The gold adds delicious dimension while still reading as a neutral, and the pattern repeat feels calming and visually interesting all at once. It took this little girls' bedroom from girly to grown-up. Pretty clever design if you ask me.

Thanks, Sheena! This beautiful install from Rebecca Jones (@xobakes) whose mom is a rock star wallpaper installer, Louise Jones (@jonespnp), and made this magic happen with Pas De Trois:

Neutral Nurseries With Juju Papers

We hope everyone is having a great summer! A big trend we're seeing right now is gender neutral nurseries and children's rooms which allow for more options and versatility as children age. The easiest way to way to achieve the look is by keeping colors neutral, then as your children grow they can add in their own objects, treasures and artwork to create a space that has been styled organically and shines with their personality.

Luckily Juju Papers offers colorways that are perfectly suited to a neutral palette. Our suggestion is our subtle Diamonds and Pearls colorway, which is available in all our new Graffito collection patterns. Dazzlingly pale pearlescent shades of white and silver are brought to life as light moves across the surface and it has the added benefit of picking up accent colors from objects nearby.

Just about every day we speak with clients and designers who are looking for neutral options. Reasons they cite for going in that direction include ...

1) Choosing not to find out the gender of their children until after they are born, but want to have the nursery ready to go;

2) Parents who don't subscribe to the traditional sexed color scheme;

3) Parents who want a color scheme that can grow with their children as they mature;

4) Children who share a bedroom;

5) Parents planning to convert their nursery after the child is older. Choosing patterns that are not strictly for kids rooms is a great way to save on redecorating costs later!

Who would know better about all this than Juju Papers founder, Avery Thatcher? As a mother of two boys under five, she has decorated their room in an overall neutral scheme with pops of red, green, blue and grey. (That's a whole other blog post though as the boys need to clean their room before pictures can be shared!)
